Tuesday Trivia: Take Us Out to the Ballgame!

Welcome to Tuesday Trivia! Each week, we tackle this big, bizarre, wonderful city through a different lens, asking you to answer the tough questions. This week we’re celebrating Opening Week by quizzing you about America’s favorite pastime and the source of one of Chicago’s best cross-town rivalries, baseball!

Ernie Banks

You might already know Ernie Banks as Mr. Cub, but how much do you know about his career outside of baseball?

1. In Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Ferris, Sloane and Cameron play hooky and attend a Cubs game. Who were the Cubs playing in the film?

a. Cincinnati Reds

b. Atlanta Braves

c. Milwaukee Brewers

d. Pittsburgh Pirates

Answer: B. Movie buffs and baseball fans have long been curious about which game the scenes were filmed at. Through some baseball sleuthing, Larry Granillo of Baseball Prospectus determined that the scene was filmed on June 5, 1985. Check out this clip, and see if you agree with his logic.

2. Ernie Banks, Mr. Cub and CIW speaker, once ran for local office. What office did he seek?

a. Mayor

b. Comptroller

c. Treasurer

d. Alderman

Answer. D. Banks unsuccessfully ran for 8th ward alderman in 1963. On the loss, Banks said, “People knew me only as a baseball player. They didn’t think I qualified as a government official, and no matter what I did I couldn’t change my image.” While Banks may not be remembered for his political career, he will always be remembered for his love of Chicago, the Cubs and of baseball itself.

3. On July 12, 1979, Comiskey Park was beyond capacity with more than 50,000 people packed in to see disco records literally explode. The event was instantly infamous, accused of hooliganism, racism and homophobia. What was this fateful night called?

a. Disco Demolition Night

b. Disco Sucks

c. Die Disco Die

d. The Last Days of Disco

Answer: A. Conceived of as a promotional opportunity by Mike Veeck and local DJ Steve Dahl, Disco Demolition Night was an expansion of Dahl’s stunt of breaking disco records over his head in bars and on air. Between games during a double header between the White Sox and the Detroit Tigers, Dahl destroyed disco records in army fatigues while the crowd chanted, “Disco sucks.” The scene quickly became chaotic, a fire was set on-field, the second game of the double header had to be forfeited and were it not for Harry Caray saving the day, there still might be chants of “disco sucks” across from the Cell today.

4. Which of these actions have been attempts to reverse the Billy Goat Curse that prevents the Cubs from winning the World Series?

a. Bringing a goat onto Wrigley Field

b. Bringing a goat onto a different baseball field

c. Hanging a dead goat from the Harry Caray statue

d. Starting a nonprofit to give goats to underprivileged families in developing countries

Answer: All of the above. Seriously. Sam Sianis, nephew of Billy Sianis, has been brought out onto Wrigley Field with a goat on four separate occasions to try to reverse the curse. In 2003, Cubs fans tried to bring a goat to Minute Maid Park in Houston. The butchered goat was only speculated to be related to the curse, but in any case, it has not appeared to work yet. Finally, Reverse the Curse seeks to do social good, while simultaneously help out their favorite and very unlucky team. a.

6. Minnie Minoso, left fielder for the White Sox, had a particularly long career. How many decades did his career span?

a. Four

b. Five

c. Six

d. Seven

Answer: D. That’s right folks, Minoso is the only baseball player to have appeared professionally in seven different decades. Minoso played for the New York Cubans starting in 1946. He officially retired in 1964 but did not stop playing. In 1976, Minoso worked as first and third base coach for the White Sox and made a few game appearances. In 1980, Miñoso was the pinch hitter for the Sox in two games against the California Angels. In 1993 and 2003, he appeared with the St. Paul Saints of the Northern League.
