This Week on the Internet

What’s new on the Internet this week?  Some pre-Oscar buzz, a little controversy around the critically acclaimed True Detective and The Onion strikes again.

CLINTON 2016 MEETS CLINTON ’92
The Clinton Presidential Library has released thousands of documents from Bill Clinton’s tenure in office—documents that many think may provide just as much insight into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as she prepares for a 2016 bid, as they do into the actions of our 42nd President.

LEAN IN, IT’S ALL THE RAGE
Lean in, lean out, stand tall—we’re not even sure what we’re supposed to be doing anymore.  But we agree with the New Republic‘s Rebecca Traister: There’s no use in blaming Sheryl Sandberg.  If nothing else, Sandberg has sparked a much-needed conversation about how to get more women out of middle management and into the boardroom.

If you think this TIME cover is from the current debate
over Sheryl Sandberg, think again: It’s almost one year old today.

THE ONION’S IT DEPARTMENT: THEY’RE FUNNY, TOO
You jest, Onion writers, but we’ve tried a few of your tips for troubleshooting our computers, and we’re a little worried our IT staff is still giving us the cold shoulder.

LOOSE LIPS SINK SHIPS
But not harboring secrets also leads to a happier, more relaxed state of mind.  Our Executive Director Jessica Malkin pointed out this fascinating post on the dangers of keeping secrets.  We wonder if she’s trying to tell us anything…

BORING HAS GONE MAINSTREAM
New York Magazine has coined a term for a trend we’ve all noticed: Of-the-moment teenage girls are dressing like our moms, circa 1995.  Have you embraced normcore yet?

LET’S ALL MOVE TO NORTH DAKOTA
What does the Census have to say about how the U.S. has changed?  More people are moving to Florida, the birth rate is falling and North Dakota is booming while everywhere else is still knee-deep in the recession.  Now all that state needs is a Fargo Ideas Week…

DOES TRUE DETECTIVE HAVE TRUE HEART?
It seems a week doesn’t go by without a discussion of women in the media.  Now up for debate is HBO’s Southern gothic True Detective, with critics asking: Are the female characters purposefully two-dimensional, or hopelessly vapid?  (Also, are you watching FX’s The Americans yet?  It came back for a second season this week—bigger, better and with even more wigs.  Yes, wigs.)

THE KING’S GUITAR
Where did Elvis get his signature sound?  Guitar maker Randy Wood, who has since made instruments for the likes of Eric Clapton and Keith Richards, definitely had an important role in the King’s music.

OSCARS, DE LA RENTA

Red carpet culture is so pervasive that you might think it’s been around since the iconic Hollywood sign went up in Hollywood Hills.  In fact, as you can see in this poster of every dress worn by every Best Actress winner since 1929, no one bothered to announce who they were wearing until 1985, when Sally Field wore Holly Harp.  It makes you remember that, yes, Joan Rivers did have a career before The Fashion Police—and it was pretty impressive.

KANYE WEST: OSCAR CONTENDER?
Breaking news via our resident Kanye expert, Program and Community Manager Kelly Hagler: Kanye’s made a film, and it’s coming to a theater near you.

Brooke Scheyer is the director of programming.
