Events: Where to Think Out Loud this Weekend

Crowd surfing and killer music abound at Pitchfork Music Festival 2012.
With music in the air, food in the belly and a couple of mind-blowing museum exhibits, where will you choose to be inspired this weekend?
  1. Jam out at the 7th annual Pitchfork Music Festival in Union Park.
Three-day passes are sold out for this independent music festival, but if you hurry you can snag a one-day pass to revel in sound waves and muddy mosh pits. Enjoy more than 40 bands and artists like Björk, Belle & Sebastian and M.I.A on stages more intimate than Lollapalooza and grittier than the Metro. Don’t forget to say hello to CIW Co-op member and CHIRP radio founder Shawn Campbell and shop for records in between sets at the CHIRPrecord fair!

  1. Watch the last show of this year’s Goodman Latino Theatre Festival.
Critically acclaimed Home/Landvividly depicts the true stories of immigrant families struggling to survive and create a better life in a new land. The play will be performed in English with Spanish supertitles – bring the Kleenex and brace yourself for powerful tales of optimism, risk and resilience.

  1. Fill your belly at the Taste of River North.
If you didn’t try all your favorites at the Taste of Chicago, the Taste of River North is sure to satisfy your cravings with generous portions from restaurants such as Kinzie Chophouse, Sullivan’s and Motel Bar. Catch bands like Rock Candy or Sixteen Candles at this family-friendly event and remember to come hungry.

  1. Celebrate the Museum of Science & Industry’s 80th anniversary.
Immerse yourself in 80 rare artifacts—such as the engine from a WWII British Supermarine Spitfire plane or the first modern GPS. You also might remember some familiar faces from past exhibits, such as a gigantic Paul Bunyan statue or TAM, the Transparent Anatomical Manikin.

  1. Catch a glimpse of Heaven on Earth before it leaves Chicago July 28.
Immerse yourself in a lush habitat with videos of birds flying overhead and the echoing sounds of their calls at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago’s “Between Heaven and Earth: Birds in Ancient Egypt” exhibit. This is the first time the United States has featured an exhibit dedicated to the birds of the Nile – here you’ll explore the impact these birds had on ancient Egyptian religion, design and more.
