Inspired to Act: Explore Identity
This week’s Video of the Week: Lauren Lubin’s “Breaking Free of the Gender Binary“.
Inspired to act? Here are 5 ways to help embrace individuals of all identities:
- Donate to WE EXIST (formerly Gender Blender)! WE EXIST is a documentary following Lauren Lubin’s life and her journey through the physical, emotional and spiritual changes Lauren undergoes as an individual who identifies as “gender neutral.”
- Get involved with the Brown Boi Project, a program that cultivates space in which masculine-of-center women and men of color can explore and develop healthy frameworks of masculinity within the context of family, gender, race, sexual orientation and class.
- Visit the Center on Halsted where more than 1,000 community members visit every day! Located in the heart of Chicago’s Lakeview neighborhood, Center on Halsted is the Midwest’s most comphrehinsive community center dedicated to building and strengthening the LGBTQ community.
- Take part in a history-making petition to support LGBT rights in Boy Scouts. CIW 2012 Speaker Zach Wahls’ campaign “Scouts for Equality” is a national campaign to end the Boy Scouts of America’s ban on gay members.
- Make yourself aware of Indiegogo campaigns! A recent campaign from the brothers of Phi Alpha Tau at Emerson College in Boston joined together to help raise money for a fellow transgender brother who was initially denied funds from insurance for top surgery. Check out how much they raised! Want to start your own campaign? Petition to have gender-neutral bathrooms designated in your office building!
