Free Spirit Media: Empowering the Next Generation of Creators to Tell Their Stories
COMMUNITY AREA #29: North Lawndale—Free Spirit Media
Since 2001, Free Spirit Media has empowered more than 6,500 Chicago youth to share their stories, discover their potential, and engage with peers and communities through hands-on media literacy and production experiences.
In both in-school and after-school programming, Free Spirit Media students produce over 700 unique and compelling media pieces each year. Their projects range from documentaries, sports broadcasts, news packages, audio stories, PSAs, and narrative films, and more. Each piece aids in the discovery each young creator’s voice as well as aiding in community growth and collaboration.
We sat down with the team behind Free Spirit Media and checked in with the young people they are impacting. Watch below to learn more.

The 77 Project is a storytelling and media project presented in partnership with Xfinity with additional support from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to help redefine the narrative of our neighborhoods from the inside out. We’ll spend 2019 shining a light on organizations and individuals in each of the 77 community areas of Chicago who are making a positive impact. Know someone we should speak with? Recommend them here.
